In a digital age where people engage, digitising the ‘Handshake’ bet just made sense.
Friendly competition is a rich history amongst friends. In a digital age where people engage, digitising the Handshake bet just made sense. For the past 5 years’, Buddybet has begun digitising the ‘Handshake’ bet, creating a fully functioning mobile application that delivers on its core principle, to connect people via shared moments of friendly competition. Sure, we trust our buddies to make good on handshake bets. But, let’s digitise those handshakes and make sure all of our victories – no matter how small – are on the record.
As a startup with a unique identity entering a highly saturated market, Buddybet required swift delivery of projects to ensure first-to-market advantage. The core projects delivered were: Marketing Strategy/Plan, Content Strategy, Social Strategy, App Re-development, Web Development, Investor Pitch Deck, Capital Raise, and Campaign Management.
Concept, Strategy and Campaign Management – purposeful and objective base-oriented design for Marketing, Advertising and Investors.
A carefully constructed marketing plan and strategy were produced ensuring all collateral produced had a purpose and was objective based driven. Focussing on industry insights and audience segmentation, Buddybet needed to reposition customer sentiment on wagering. The key to a customer was to begin to bring back the ‘Handshake’ bet to convince potential users to download the app. There were 3 proposed concepts, all built by a clearly defined framework that validated their purpose: let’s make it interesting, moments worth sharing, and Hold your buddies accountable.
Moments Worth Sharing.
Here the brand could have a bit of fun, the focus was to drive the initiative to post bets in a social and fun manner. All those funny quirky I dare you bets – this was a place for them to be represented in the brands’ campaigns. Pushing bragging rights and validation.
Let’s Make it Interesting.
These campaigns were there for making those dull moments in life a little more interesting. Forced to sit through this season’s Bachelor? Make it interesting with a wager on who will get the first pash.
Hold Your Buddies Accountable.
Ever had a flakey mate that doesn’t pay up, well now you can hold your buddies accountable. This was designed to target repetitive customers, those who currently bet on other platforms, that place 1-2 bets per week.
A complete UX/UI re-development that educated behaviour, drove engagement and secured retention.
A fantastic opportunity to align the app with our strategy, I was entrusted to Re-develop the Buddybet app and asked to introduce key features that would engage, demonstrate, and ultimately drive retention rates within the app.
This project required a complete UX/UI redesign, incorporating over 350 screen states in a functioning prototype. Although a highly demanding project, the results were a successful, high-quality prototype. The key features that were most noticeable in effect to the present day are:
Open Bet.
What happens when users don’t have friends accepting bets? Open Bets was designed to allow users to push their bets to the open Buddybet network, preventing them from losing out on opportunities and hopefully extending their friend network for their profile.
Voting Bar.
How do validate users and drive engagement within a bet card (user post). Buddybet’s version of a like system, the introduction of an agree disagree system allowed users to have differing points of view, ultimately driving conversation. When viewing the opposing voters, a user could accept any proposed bets on the opposite view from other users. This resulted in an increased retention rate for users.
Novelty Category.
Posed with the challenge of ensuring Buddybet wasn’t used as a traditional sports book, the Novelty Category was created. Here users could see quirky events including ones that they could participate in. The intent was to get people out to participate in social events whilst still engaging in friendly competition.
A highly demanding and very rewarding project, Buddybet provided opportunities to develop a breadth of skills in the digital space.
With no internal design/marketing department due to the unplanned impact Covid-19 had on resourcing, the responsibilities of design and marketing services were increased.
During the experience, I was able to adapt and develop the critical functional design techniques and processes required when navigating through the digital space. I worked collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders that had competing ideas and visions of the product, whilst delivering works within fast and inflexible timelines.
